The American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter (SLI) shall possess: an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major study in a field related to either interpretation or American Sign Language (ASL) studies; or be able to provide sufficient assurances that the American Sign Language interpreter has the required knowledge and skills necessary to act as a competent interpreter. The SLI interpreter must have a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. In lieu of a degree, the interpreter may hold current generalist (or higher) licensure by either the National Association of the Deaf or the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Preference will be given to the individual who has demonstrated experience working with children in an educational setting.
Hours of Operation
: The interprter will be responsible for conducting business between the hours of 8:15 AM and 2:50 PM, excluding lunch, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; and between the hours of 8:15 AM to 1:50 PM on Tuesdays when classes are in session. Exceptions to the stated hours of operation are Federal holidays and/or in instances when the facility is closed due to local or national emergencies, administrative closings, or similar directed facility closings. The assigned staff shall at all times maintain uninterrupted performance of all tasks defined within this job description.
Pay Rate: Negotiable.

Scope/Description of Services
: The interpreter shall perform Sign Language Interpreter services for a 1st grade student attending an Elementary School in Montgomery AL area. The student will receive cochlear implant surgery and upon return to school will be totally non-hearing for 2-6 months. She is not yet fluent in sign, but is receiving instruction for this from a qualified teacher. The interpreter will provide sign language interpreting, lip reading services to the student (as needed), and support throughout the school day.
Provide Sign Language Interpreter services for a student who needs such services to further their educational development
Development and implementation of individualized academic skill targets, social skill targets, and functional skill targets;
Development and implementation of data collection procedures, including trend analysis, and progress monitoring.
